Exhibiting at IBC Conference in Amsterdam (10-14th September 2009), Humax have finally unveiled the first details of its eagerly awaited first entry to the UK high definition market with its Freeview HD Box.
The device on display only had a single tuner (opposed to a twin-tuner hard disk recorder) but it did support DVB-T2 and DVB-T with MPEG2 and MPEG4 H.264 decoding which are all required for Freeview HD.
The Humax box is also reportedly DLNA compliant. DLNA – Digital Living Network Alliance – is a relatively new standard used to connect home entertainment devices. This should enable net-streaming, possibly for BBC iPlayer and ITV net player. There are also suggestions that a PVR version with built in hard disk drive will shortly follow the non-recording model, possibly with the ability to record on to portable USB hard drives.
Whilst pricing hasn’t been announced, a Humax spokesperson hinted this would be similar to the Freesat range, which are around the £100.
But don’t get too excited – despite the Winter Hill transmitter being turned on in December 2009, this device won’t be available until early 2010. So no Freeview HD boxes for Christmas – this year at least.
