What is Freeview HD?

Freeview HD builds on the huge success of Freeview – the UK’s subscription-free digital terrestrial television service received through a standard television aerial. You don’t need cable, or a satellite dish, and best of all, it’s absolutely free.

With Freeview HD, you still get the 50+ free television and digital radio channels of Freeview, with added High Definition channels such as BBC HD, ITV 1 HD. More HD channels will be added in due course.

HD stands for High Definition. In television terms, this means sharper, clearer pictures – in fact up to 5 times more detail that you would get in standard definition. People who already have Freeview HD often say how surprised they are to be able to see individual blades of grass when watching football. When HD was first released in America, actors didn’t like it because it shows imperfections and blemishes on their skin that would usually go unnoticed on standard definition!

Not only do you get improved picture definition, but you also get Dolby 5.1 quality stereo surround sound to round off the perfect home cinema effect. If you need a home new audio system, Gadget Heaven is a good place to start your research. The only downside is that not everyone in the UK will be able to receive Freeview HD until 2012, although half of the population will be able to view it in time for the World Cup in June 2010.
